Oil Change

3 Signs You Should Change Your Oil

Besides the usual every 3,000 miles, oil changes may be necessary for many other reasons. The age of your vehicle, the condition of the engine, and how much you drive will all determine when you need an oil change. This basic maintenance task can not only make a huge difference in how long your vehicle lasts, but also in how well it runs. At Auto Specialty of Lafayette, Inc., we highly recommend you have your oil changed if you notice any of the signs below.

1. Dark or Dirty Oil

When the oil in your vehicle is dark, thick, and dirty, this is a definite sign you need to change it. Clean oil is light brown or golden-colored. If you notice it’s beginning to change colors before your next scheduled oil change appointment, it’s best to move up that appointment to sooner rather than later.

2. Noisy or Knocking Engine

Oil works in your vehicle by creating lubrication for the engine. All those moving metal parts can create a lot of heat and friction. Oil protects your engine from damage caused by that same heat and friction. If oil is not lubricating your engine, or if it’s too thick and dirty to be effective, your engine will begin to sound louder. This is another sign it’s time to change your oil.

3. Oil Smell Inside Your Car

While driving your car, you should never smell the oil from the inside. If the odor is strong enough, this could mean there is an oil leak. If you smell a combination of oil and smoke, this could be a sign that the vehicle is overheating and oil is burning rather than lubricating your engine. We recommend you make an appointment to have your car looked at immediately.
