Fuel-Efficiency Tips

No one enjoys paying for gas, but it’s a necessary expense if you want to drive. The good news is that, while you’ll always have to pay the pump, there are several ways that you can cut back on fuel consumption. The two previous posts have already discussed four methods, and this entry concludes the series by offering two final gas-saving tips. Get the most out of every drop of gas by adhering to these guidelines.

#5: Follow the Speed Limit

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, most vehicles become less fuel-efficient if they exceed speeds of 50 mph. Make sure to always follow the posted speed limits. Speeding may seem a little faster, but you’ll end up paying for it in gas—and costly tickets.
  • The U.S. Department of Energy estimates that obeying the speed limit can increase fuel-efficiency by 7%–14%. This can save you $0.25–$0.51/gallon.*

#6: Don’t Idle

If you’re waiting for your spouse to grab something from the grocery store, or for your kids to come out of school, remember that extended idling wastes gas. Instead of idling, turn off your engine and give yourself a pat on the back for saving money and the environment.
  • Opting to turn off the engine can save you $0.01–$0.04/minute.*
