Your vehicle’s suspension plays an important role in stabilizing steering as well as ensuring a controlled, smooth ride. At Auto Specialty of Lafayette, Inc., we believe the best way to keep your suspension performing in top-notch condition is to follow the maintenance schedule recommended by your car’s manufacturer. While there are several areas in a vehicle that needs maintenance, such as the struts, bearings, coils, shock absorbers, and more, we suggest you prioritize the maintenance tasks below in order to effectively maintain the suspension in your vehicle.

3 Maintenance Tasks to Keep a Car's Suspension Working Properly

1. Tire Inflation

An underinflated tire can cause a host of problems, such as decreasing the fuel economy, increasing tire wear, and making it seriously unsafe to drive your vehicle. We recommend checking your tire pressure with a tire gauge every 1,000 to 3,000 miles to prevent underinflation. If a tire loses air consistently, you’ll need to bring it in for repair or possible replacement.

2. Tire Rotation

Another way to maintain your vehicle’s suspension is to have the tires rotated regularly. Most vehicle manufacturers recommend every 10,000 miles. When rotating the tires, you should check the tread depth as well. A tire’s tread helps with grip, as well as protecting against hydroplaning in wet conditions. If there is not much tread left on the tires, they may also need to be replaced.

3. Wheel Alignment

All four wheels should be aligned regularly to help maintain your vehicle’s suspension system. This should be done every two years or 30,000 miles. If you drive over rough roads often, such as dirt, gravel, or those with multiple potholes, then we instead recommend you have your wheels aligned every 15,000 miles. Remember, any time you replace one or more of your vehicle’s tires, you should get your wheels aligned.
